How a Fixed Deposit Works

A Fixed Deposit (FD) lets you invest a lump sum with a bank for a fixed period at a guaranteed interest rate. It is one of the safest savings options in India, with deposits insured up to โ‚น5 lakh per bank by DICGC. FDs are ideal for money you will not need for a while and want to grow with zero risk to capital.

This FD calculator computes your maturity amount using compound interest, usually compounded quarterly: A = P ร— (1 + r/n)^(nร—t), where P is your deposit, r is the annual rate, n is how many times a year interest compounds, and t is the number of years. Enter your amount, rate and tenure to see exactly what your FD will be worth at maturity.

For instance, โ‚น1,00,000 at 7% compounded quarterly for 5 years grows to about โ‚น1,41,478 โ€” earning roughly โ‚น41,478 in interest. Senior citizens usually earn an extra 0.25%โ€“0.50%, which our calculator can reflect if you use the higher rate.

Frequently asked questions

Is FD interest taxable?

Yes, FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab. Banks deduct TDS once annual interest crosses the threshold.

Can I withdraw an FD before maturity?

Yes, most FDs allow premature withdrawal with a small interest penalty. Some tax-saver FDs have a 5-year lock-in.
