India has one of the most advanced digital payment systems in the world, but the alphabet soup of NEFT, RTGS, IMPS and UPI can be confusing. Each one is designed for a different situation. Knowing which to use saves you time, money and the occasional failed transaction.

UPI — for everyday, instant payments

Unified Payments Interface (UPI) is the system behind apps like Google Pay, PhonePe and BHIM. It is instant, works 24×7, and needs only a UPI ID or a scanned QR code — no account number or IFSC. It is free for individuals and perfect for daily payments, splitting bills and paying shops.

Best for: Small to medium instant payments, day to day. Per-transaction limits are typically ₹1 lakh (higher for some categories).

IMPS — instant transfers, any time

Immediate Payment Service (IMPS) moves money instantly, 24×7, including holidays. Unlike UPI, it uses the recipient's account number and IFSC (or mobile number and MMID). It is ideal when you need money to reach someone immediately outside UPI, such as a larger transfer.

Best for: Instant transfers up to ₹5 lakh, any time. Banks may charge a small fee.

NEFT — reliable transfers of any amount

National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT) settles transactions in batches. It now runs 24×7, though it may take a little longer than IMPS to reflect. There is no maximum limit, which makes it useful for larger, non-urgent payments. It needs the recipient's account number and IFSC.

Best for: Transfers of any amount where a short delay is fine. Usually free or low-cost for online transfers.

RTGS — for large, high-value transfers

Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) is built for big amounts. It settles each transaction individually and in real time, and has a minimum of ₹2 lakh (no upper limit). It runs 24×7. Businesses and individuals use it for property payments, large vendor settlements and similar high-value transfers.

Best for: High-value transfers of ₹2 lakh and above that need to settle immediately.

How to choose in one line

Paying a shop or a friend a small amount? Use UPI. Need to send a larger amount instantly? Use IMPS. Sending a big amount (₹2 lakh+) that must settle right away? Use RTGS. Making a large, non-urgent transfer? NEFT works fine.

Frequently asked questions

Which is fastest?

UPI, IMPS and RTGS are all effectively instant. NEFT is fast but processes in short batches, so it can take a little longer to reflect.

Do I need an IFSC for UPI?

No. UPI works with a UPI ID or QR code. NEFT, RTGS and IMPS need the account number and IFSC.

Are these transfers safe?
